Mayor Kevin Johnson presents new direction of For Arts’ Sake to Sacramento region’s creative coalition.
The creative community convened at the Crocker Art Museum last week to hear from Mayor Kevin Johnson as he shared his new vision for building the arts in the California Capital region. Johnson introduced the very capable team that will now be handling the heavy lifting of the For Arts Sake initiative moving forward: Senior Advisor Cassandra Jennings and Arts & Business Council Executive Director Michelle Alexander.
In a celebratory fashion with entertainment provided by Clemon Charles and New Helvetia Theatre’s Connor Mickiewicz, attendees heard updates from FAS Co-Chair Garry Maisel, ABCS/FAS Director Michelle Alexander, Any Given Child Chairperson Cathy Taylor, and Flywheel Program Manager Tre Borden, who introduced the new Flywheel arts incubator participants.
In addition, the new mission and vision of For Arts’ Sake were introduced:
The mission of the initiative is to connect the arts community to expanded resources and information in order to realize the CA Capital region’s potential as a hub for creative endeavor.
The CA Capital region has awakened as a thriving culturally-rich arts community that is nationally recognized.
While it’s a challenging economic atmosphere right now, it is an exciting time for our arts communities as they continue to build on their strengths and grow their audiences. It is important that we maintain a connection and cross-support of each other as awareness and excitement comes from within the arts community first and foremost, which then spreads throughout the region. “For me, the objective is to convene and coordinate and to amplify all the work that’s going on in the arts community. … That is where our niche is” Johnson said.
